Force into gear

I just replaced the water pump in my 86 85 Force and it worked fine. The trouble is that now the boat won't get into forward. It makes a ratcheting sound and occasional lunges forward. The propeller seems to be moving all the time. In searching the archves, it appears that the shift linkage is off, or possibly the shift seal is bad. I can probably fix that (help is appreciated on this too though) , but I have a more pressing problem - the boat is stuck (safely) on the lake tonight. Is it possible to manually force it into gear just so that I can limp back to the dock without causing damage to the motor? I may be able to get someone to tow me, but the boat is in a remote part of the lake.

This thread may shed some light
Lower unit removal and re install

I am guessing you will need a tow. The lower unit probably needs to come off in order for you to get it in forward gear. Hope someone else here can help you out

I figured as much. Never hurts to ask though. Interesting about putting the motor in gear before removing the LU. The Seloc manual never said anything about it, and problems came up. I'm beginning to dislike that manual.

Tim, Did you remember to put the pin in shift shaft when you assembled the lower unit? If you did, then the adjustment for forward reverse should be under the air fuel intake at bottom of powerhead.

I have the L/U off on my 75HP Chrysler, I put in neutral before taking apart. Should I move the shift rod up or down and put the controls into gear before reassembling? I hope I have not screwed myself....

red neck cpa. The chrysler lower unit removal and force is different. It dont matter what gear the chrysler is in however it is easier to adjust it in neutral. You would get more visibliity to your post if you started a new thread. Chrysler threads get more chrysler owener attention.
