Force lower unit Drain/Fill gaskets?

I can only find flat gaskets for the drain and vent screws for my 1988 50 HP Force. They don't seat right because the area the gaskets rests is beveled. The gasket disintegrates because it pulls into the beveled area behind the screw when tightened. When I go to the parts stores they always give me the flat gaskets.

Any suggestions?

""When I go to the parts stores""

Get the gaskets directly from Mercury, or a Mercury dealer.

You will pay a bit more for them, but they work. I think they are 74 cents a piece now, well worth the price.

I'm having the same problem with the parts from the Mercury/Force dealer ! I also have a 50 hp, a 1989. The gaskets seem to be made out of compressed cardboard and do disintegrate when trying to tighten the drain and fill screws. At .85 cents apiece, it's getting expensive when you have to use 4 or 5 to seal 2 lousy holes. I'm ready to see if I can find some OMC washers that will work !!!

Go to hardware store and get nylon washers to fit.

In the meantime, leave them off. On mine I had one that had a gasket, and one without. Neither of them leak.
