i have an 1989 force 125 and have found a 1989 force 85 will the lower units swap out

YES---as long as they are both 20 inch midlegs (long shaft) If the 85 has a 2 to 1 gear ratio, you will need to increase pitch on your propeller 2 inches ( example:17 to 19 pitch) BUT on the plus side you should gain a little speed.

yes, provided the drive shaft lengths are the same. Like previous poster said, the gear ratios are different. 85 is 2:1 and 125 is 1.75:1 . I had both on my 89 125 and used the same prop. To be honest, I preferred the 2:1 as the hole shot was greatly increased. The rpm's difference was 5500 max for the 2:1 and 4500 max for the 1.75:1 .

Make sure you check the gear oil in the new one for metal flakes aka gear wear.
