Force/Merc marriage

I know that Merc put lower units on the Force motors after the mid 90s. I was just wondering if the whole unit below the motor was merc and could you replace the Force engine block with a Merc engine block of the same HP if the need arose? Are the mountings and vertical shaft connections the same? Would cowling clearance be an issue? I have 1995 50HP force. Thanks.

Cowling would definately be an issue. Driveshaft/crankshaft splines, too. Even shifting. Basically it's the same below the adaptor plate that connects the exhaust housing and powerhead. Very similar parts, but many are not interchangeable.

Thanks. I guess if I don't ask, I won't find out. Now I know.
