force motor problems

I have an 89 Force motor, 85 hp. I have rebuilt the carburetors, put in new plugs, changed fuel and motor is still hard starting and tries to, but will not rev up over 2000 rpms. It runs on the warm up cycle, but a lot of times when you idle down to put it into gear it dies. Any ideas on what this could be? Thank you.

Re: force motor problems

Welcome trucker.

Could be fuel, spark, or compression.

Gonna have to narrow it down a bit.

Check for spark on each plug.
Examine the plugs, do they look similar? Or is one cleaner or dirtier?

Do a compression test, gonna need a gauge. $25 at most auto parts stores, or maybe you can rent or borrow one.

Is the choke solenoid operating?

have checked the compression 120 each cylinder have put in new plugs have taken them out after running they all look the same choke is operating like it should seems to flood out before it fires up then runs but when ya try to open it up sounds to be missin and will not get over 2000 rpm some times you can see the tac coming up some and then goes back down took it out yesterday and seem if ya try to open it up it acts like it is trying to rev up but won't

I would Check your fuel line.. Better yet, if it is hasn't been replaced in 2 yrs and it has a primer bulb, It maybe sucking air, cuasing line to restrict or starve. It will only restrict when excellerated and the motor stops or stumble, idles OK. It idles OK until the throttle is used..Right ; This is what was wrong with mine and I replaced the line and that solved my problem.
