I have a 1998 Force 120. It has a few nicks and scratches on it but otherwise in good shape. Does anyone know where I can get some paint for this motor or who manufactures the Force color? I would like to re paint the whole thing. Any advise would be appreciated.

Thanks for the info J. Unfortunately the local Force/Merc dealer down here on the MS Gulf Coast was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina and has not rebuilt. Hopefully I can find some paint and have the motor looking like new again!

He has got a 1998. Needs 92 - 802878 DAMASCUS STEEL GRAY

If he had a 1997, he'd need 92 - 825321 Graphite Gray Acrylic

Re: Force Outboard motor paint

Thanks for all of the replies! I found three cans of Tempo Force Outboard Motor paint number 6989 at Fore & Aft Marine Supply in Florida. They specialize in hard to find items. I paid $7.99 per can and total cost including shipping was $35.65. I was told they had three more cans left after my order, so if anyone needs paint for a '98 Force you can get it there.

Re: Force Outboard motor paint

Furyman, I'm not going to remove the old paint. It's in good condition. What I am going to do is this: wipe the entire motor down with mineral spirits to remove wax, oil and any contaminates on the surface, then sand the entire motor with 220 grit sandpaper. After sanding I'll spot prime with zinc chromate the skeg that has missing paint from hitting sandbars. I will then sand the primed spots and once again wipe the motor with mineral spirits. After the mineral spirits dries, I'll mask off the decals, ss bolts etc. and apply two coats of paint, sanding lightly between coats. After the paint dries I'll apply a clear coat. I guess my wife will just have to cut the grass by herself this weekend!!! Haha!! Good luck with your project. Let me know how your's turns out.

It sounds like your paint is good but you just want it shiny. There's better stuff than mineral spirits for cleaning. try a water based bio-degradable degreaser ($10 a glaoon from harbor freight and mixes out 20:1) followed with a good professional grade pre-paint degreaser like PPG DX330. Then just use a sanding pad/sponge #300ish to scuff the surface and shoot a good clearcoat. It'll make your old paint look new.

Re: Force Outboard motor paint

Thanks for the info RRitt. I've already bought the paint, quart of mineral spirits and clear coat. It rained all this weekend so I'm going to start the project tomorrow. The #300 would probably be a better sandpaper than the 250 grit I bought, but the 250 is a wet/dry type. If I can figure out how to send some pictures, I'll send some before and after.

check your mineral spirits on a test surface first. I've had some brands that leave residue. Wash a surface as you would your engine then wet it with running water. If the water sheets up evenly then its okay. If the water does not form an even sheet or if it beads then the min spirits are leaving a residue.

RRitt, I also have some lacquer thinner, would that be a better product to wipe the unit down with?
Thanks!
