Force Outboard

Hi<br /><br />I have been offered a 1987 Bayliner Capri (17ft) with a Force 125hp Outboard. I know very little about Force, are they a good reliable engine? Do they require alot of maintenance? I am in the UK are parts readily avalible? I would be grateful for any opinions.

dave<br /><br />a hull of that age is very likely to have man rot problems that neeed to checked out it realy depends on how the boat was stored and cared for by its owner<br /><br />force motors have been out of production so parts may be hard to find again it depends if it was used in fresh water you can do many repiars if it had a saltwater life its very hard to take apart with out breaking everything<br /><br />tommays

Wow, Both Force and Bayliner in one sentence!!<br /><br />They were introduced as a cheep package deal back then and that is exactly what they were. If this combo was taken VERY GOOD CARE OF and still looks like new, you might get some decent use out of it, otherwise I would run as fast as as I could muster the energy for.

The thing that concerns me most is the ignition system. The Prestolite system isn't available anymore. Not one single part. Sometimes I can find a few, but I live right in their back yard. Over there I'd think it just about impossible. If any component fails, you have to buy a whole new system (which is a good one) and they are forbiddingly expensive. I'd also be looking for soft areas in the floor and transom. Otherwise one wouldn't scare me off if the price was right ... like cheap and running.

The older Bayliners have issues (poor quality).<br />The same thing can be said about the Force motors.
