what would a 1990 120hp forces power be comparable to say a evinrude or johnson or other brands? do you think a good running 90hp evinrude would compare to it? i'm in the market for another motor and would like to have something atleast with similar power....the 120 pushed my boat 35mph at WOT the boat is 2200lbs.

Re: force power compared to other brands?

Kajun,
I don't know of any direct conversion. I understand that horsepower for Force outboards was rated at the powerhead versus being rated at the prop as Johnson and Evinrude often are. How you would directly convert that, I don't know. My outboard shop man once told me the Force 50 I run probably only produces around 40 hp at the prop. That amounts to about a 20 percent loss. Therefore, a Force 120 might only be producing 96 hp at the prop. Following that line of reasoning, your Evinrude 90 might be a fairly equitable substitute.

Re: force power compared to other brands?

ALL outboards built after 1983 were rated at the prop.

They had to meet their advertised HP, + or - 10%.

Some of the earlier Force models did not have the most effcient lower units in the world, small props, etc.

However, for some reason, most Merc., John/Rude- 115's, etc. would outrun them.

I suspect a 90 would run with the 120, not outrun it.

It all depends on engine health and set up, regardless of brand.

In my book Merc is + 10%
OMC is at par
Force is - 10%

With high HP it's hard to tell the difference at Wot.

Cheers
