Knock on wood... This is the first Force problem I have had thus far in my 5 years of running this 1987 85HP motor.

This is the problem.

I keep my boat in a slip for 2 weeks at a time to fish for Rockfish in the Chesapeake Bay. I usually take the boat out about twice a week.

The last few times I have taken it out the motor seems to bog down for a bit and then breaks free.

When I go and start the motor, it turns over fine. Before taking off (After its warmed up) I notice the idile is low. When I make it to the end of the no wake zone I give it gas.

It doesn't want to move out of the hole at all. I then back off the throttle and try it again. On about the 4th time it breaks free and runs great and fast all night.

Yesterday I went down to the slip and pulled the plugs looking for excessive carbon buildup. All 3 look normal. I unscrewed the fuel filter to inspect any debris in the screen and none.

The primer bulb is tight and not losing pressure.

Any Ideas on what this could be???? I don't want to mess with the carbs, because everything I have read says they shouldn't need any adjustment. Plus I am not a mechanic and don't want to screw anything up.

Comments appreciated....

Thanks

Re: Force Problems

Forgot the mention that the gas is only about a week old and I run quicksilver oil at a 50:1 ratio. Have done that since I owned the motor.

Also, I do do a bit of slow trolling, but after trolling I still have 5 miles to get back to the marina, where I run the boat at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle. Seems to always run great after getting rid of the bog on the 3rd or 4th try.

Re: Force Problems

Sounds like the carb might be getting a little gummy.. :)

Go to Wal Mart and in the automotive section look for Berrymans B12. Its a carb cleaner and fuel additive and works real well..Iv used it for years. Run it awhile and you might not have to pull the carbs..Less than three dollars.

Re: Force Problems

Fishthebay,
Does the RPM seam to be up to par? Does it act like a slipping clutch,or more like someone holding the throttle back?

Dont worry too much about removing the carbs for cleaning. Buy a rebuild kit for each one,and a can of spray carb cleaner. You wont need all the gaskets, as you won't be tearing it down all the way.
Undo the fuel line at the carb.
Unbolt the carb (nut on each side).
The other linkage can be moved clear with a free finger, and th carb's mounted linkage slipped-out from under motor-mounted linkage.

Carefully,Remove the first one.
Remove the bowl.
Now,turn the mixture screw in until it just makes contact (DO NOT TORGUE IT TIGHT),just till it bottoms-out, while counting the turns. Write the number on a piece of paper,so you don't forget the original adjustment. Then, unscrew it all the way out.Spray it with carb cleaner, then immediately wipe it off (it's clean now).Set it aside on a clean rag. Now take the carb cleaner's wand, and spray it into the pickup tube (The part of the carb that extends down to where the bottom of the bowl would be).
In the side of this tube, there is a brass jet,or orafice. Spray some carb cleaner thru that too.
Use plenty of cleaner,in every orafice of the carb, but be carefull.Spraying into one hole,it may come out another,POINTED DIRECTLY AT YOUR FACE...It doesn't taste good, and can blind you.

Reinstall bowl (using new bowl gasket).

Reinstall mixture screw (all the way till it bottoms-out, then back out the number of turns on the paper). IT will maintain the exact same settings as it was before you cleaned the carb.

Re-install the carb using new intake gasket.
Go on to carb #2.
You could go further while you are in there, but it's not important, as you stated the primer ball pumps firm, and no leaking fuel.
Besides, this is where the carb-rebuild can get a bit tricky (float level adjustment and such rot).
If you get into trouble, you know where to find help.
Good luck.

Re: Force Problems

Thanks guys. Hey 12Footer - Can I try a can of decarb, or run a bottle of carbonguard through the tank prior to dissasembling anything????

The motor runs like new, once it breaks free from its bog around the 3rd or 4th time.

Its like you put the throttle all the way forward and it goes slow, spits for a second or two and then breaks free to full throttle. This only happens the first time its used. After that the rest of the day is fine. No bogging at all.

Re: Force Problems

Tell ya what...Those bowls may have actual water in them, so try loosening the bowl nut (on the bottom of the bowl) just enough to drain them. Then tighten them back down.
I recommend decarbing every 80 hours of operation, and even every other trip, if you idle for extended periods. I use the spray type, because it works better in my engines.Mine won't run right with fuel additives. But others swear by the add-in
type. A beneift over the spray is that additives are consistant...But like said, mine don't like the stuff. But do decarbon her.

Re: Force Problems

One more ? 12 footer. When I use the can of Debarb can I do this when the boat is in the water? Also, my 3 carbs have an intake cover over them. I assume that the holes in the middle of them lead to the flap on the carbs, so can I just spray the debarb through the holes, or does the intake cover need to be taken off??? Do I engage the choke with the key to open the flaps on the carb?

Sorry for the terminology here, but I am no boat mechanic. Pretty mechanically inclined, but no master.

I honestly appreciate the help you have given me thus far.

Re: Force Problems

No problem with the terminolgy..Yes,you can shoot it right into the holes,no need to remove the thingy :)
You can use it on the water, but as the directions on the can will instruct, you will have to shut it down, by flooding it out with the spray, and allow it to sit for an hour or so (the longer the better).
So you might want to do it at home...Besides, it wlll smoke like an Everglades muck fire durring the treatment..And also for about 20minutes after soaking. The local marine patrol may come by to "put you out". Have another set of plugs ready,as this stuf has a tendancy to foul them.
The choke will be open, so no need to deal with the plates.
Please, feel free to ask me anything. I may not have an answer for you. But if not, surely someone else here will read it,and be able to. It's what makes iboats so good.
