Force rebuild or not.

It has been said that a Force is not worth rebuilding. I agree my 1990 90hp Force is old technology, but I am curious if I rebuild it with quality parts, shouldn't it last a long as any other rebuild engine?

Well, it lasted 12years so far. There are lots of old Forces out there, still chuggin allong, but only you can answer your question, really. Do you feel confident enough to tackle this job, or do you want a shop to do it? If you go with a shop, it's going to be just as expensive to buy another used engine. Also, a practical rebuild would rely on a good block, with only slight internal damage to work with. For instance, if you threw a rod, and the pieces wiped-out the crankshaft, it probably wouldn't be cost-effective, even if you rebuilt it yourself.
It will take time and lots of cash, but could actually be fun and rewarding (not that I can't wait until mine gets holy piston syndrome, but I do like to tinker with that stuff). I have an old Merc out there now, but must wait for rebuild money and cooler garage temps (it's hotter than Haedes out there now). :D

Thanks 12 Footer. The block is fine it's just starting to get low on compression about 120,120,and 125. I believe I can get all new parts for about $800. I can do the work myself, exept for the boring I will send it out, I just couln't figure out why it would not be worth rebuilding. The lower unit was rebuilt last and has all new parts.

Consider this E/J have been in production for
close to 100 years Merc for 60+ years.Forse
for about 15 years Seems to be a lot of force problems posted Compared to production.

Oil Slick,
Had my Force outboard in for a repair this year. Mechanic mentioned that powerhead was close to failure. He recommended not to rebuild, but to buy another brand, used outboard. Since Force Outboards have been discontinued, parts have been harder to order. Even if you were to rebuild, you may be stuck with not being able to get parts in the future.

Thanks guy's. These are the types of opinions I was looking for. If it is cost effective, I may rebuild, if not I will keep looking for a different motor.

I dont think with 120 lbs compression it needs a rebuild. I would do decarb, fresh gas good, oil that you like , and run it. If it has been run hot 2/3 times replace head gasket.

I agree with clanton, with those type of compression figures I wouldn't touch it. It won't be any better after the rebuild. Take the $800 you will save and put it aside for the day you have enough money to buy a different brand motor. Actually with that $800 you could probably get a better motor (eg. a 1970's Johnson). :)
