Force timing and ignition problems

I have a 1988 85 hp Force motor that is not starting. The second cylinder (of 3) is not sparking. I have determined that the blue power pack is the problem. I have also noticed that there is an extra wire coming out of the power pack, which appears to be there for a possible extra cylinder. Since mine is a 3 cylinder, I have two power packs, in which one powers 2 cylinders while the other only powers one. If I switch the wire that doesn't work to the one that isn't being used, I get a spark. But I'm afraid that I might seriously damage the engine if the timing isn't right. Is it ok to simply switch to the wire that isn't used to get a spark, or will that effect the timing?

Thanks to anyone who can help.
