88c Force 50 Hp.
I've installed a new water pump in this motor and when I started it up I din't get any water flow out the exhaust ports. Installation went smooth or so I thought. I have since taken it apart twice since then to try to find the problem but it all looks ok. At a loss what do try next. I have two manuals and the parts list but they are no help at this point.

Re: Force water pump

Is there a thermostat? If so, can you remove it and check for flow to that point?

Re: Force water pump

You didn't mention the thermostat. Remove it and see if you get the steam from the two exaust ports on the back of the leg.
If you see steam there, your fine. Also, do not try to use muffs on this engine, unless you have the Force 50HP muffs. Others will not seal on this intake. Try submerging the foot in a large trash can (I bought one expressly for this reason, and installed a drain valve on the bottom of it).
Also, check the intake for mud daubber nests, if you have them criiters in you neck o the woods. Those little buggers will make a home in your intake (especially if the plastic screen is broken and open to the water).

Yes there is a thermostat. I tried spraying water up the intake tube with the gear case off and I could see water at the exshaust but the force wasn't great enough to force water out the ports. It would seem if the thermostat was cloesd I wouldn't see any water. The prop was in a half 55 gallon drum of water and no bees in the intake.

Re: Force water pump

I think you are in good shape, actually,Hitec. Those two ports should spit a water/exaust spray,as opposed to a stream of water. As long as you have that spray, your cooling system is 100%.
The porst issue-out whatever is happening internally, which is actually better than just a telltale of water out of the pressure side (as in some outboards).
To go a step further, feel the block by the head on the starboard side after a minute or so. It should be just cool enough to leave your hand on for 3 seconds.

Re: Force water pump

I suppose that I had never let it run long enough to get any water out. So I let it run for a couple of minutes and yes it did spit water out. I expected a steady stream.
That has led me to a couple of more questions or problems. There is a small hole by one of the gearcase bolts that has water coming out. Is this normal or do I have a cracked lower unit? Also I have water coming from around the gear rod coming out of the motor leg again is this normal or do I have another problem? Thanks for your help.

Re: Force water pump

That hole is to drain the leg. The leg above the lower unit was not meant to be water tight, but the fact that it has water comming out of that hole and the shift shaft hole isn't exactly good tho, as it would indicate water being pumped into the leg instead of thru the tube to the powerhead. A little is ok, but it sounds like the water pump housing tube isn't inside of the leg tube,or that plastic, tapered tube is cracked or warped.
Install a new thermostat,as it shouldn't take more than a minute to open. Do replace it tho. It's ok to remove briefly to test the flow, but install a new one. They are only about 9 bukz or so.

Re: Force water pump

Ok I will replace the thermostat. Should I replace the thermoswitch at the same time?
I can't find any mention of the uptake tube in my manuals or parts list. How does the uptake tube going thur the leg come out for inspection? Actually the water pump tube as is the one that came out on the outside of the uptake tube. Thank You for your help.

Re: Force water pump

These motors mostly leak at the plastic, tapered piece at the water pump housing. Check it for damage. A crack or warp in the taper, and it'll leak like crazy.
I've never had to remove the uptake tube on one of these, but I doubt you have a problem there...At least I hope not.
They are tricky to get lined-up during re-assembly. I have assembled one and got the tubes out of alignment enough to crack the pump housing tube (the plastic piece).

I once put an impeller in backwards. Yes , I know what a dumb thing to do. If all else fails check to make sure that the impeller is installed properly.
