Had boat out today and everything running great. Cruising at about 3/4 throttle and about 3500 rpm. I went to full throttle and heard a slight pinging. Backed off throttle a touch and it went away. Again wide open and same sound. Doesn't do it at any other rpm or from stop to plane. Also has never done it before with this engine since it was rebuilt

Check your timing and the quality of the fuel in your filter

change the spark plugs , leads , distributor cap and rotor , if its points change them and the condenser as well.

guessing plugs , but i usually change out all the above just as preventive maintenance.

And don't cheap out on parts. Seen it to many times when someone uses cheap wires and such. The problems get worse.

Look at your plugs first they can tell you a lot. Pinging can be tough to solve because it can be too much advance, lean fuel mix or even a slow to open auto choke that causes carbon build up which will cause chronic pinging. We had this very same problem on a ‘70 Ford with a 302. The choke never opened due to an air leak in the choke housing (Autolite 2100 2bbl). Had it to 2 mechanics neither could figure this out. I looked at how it was supposed to work sprayed some oil on the choke shaft & watched the choke start to open. All it took was a fiber washer on the choke shaft. Had to use GM engine cleaner to get the carbon out.

Guys,

its a newly rebuilt motor @Jakem covered in his resto thread

pinging is either timing too far advanced or running lean.

Hence, check the timing and check the fuel filter contents.

I would check what the full total advance is too. Might also look at what fuel pressure is at WOT and if power valve is operating correctly (correct one in terms of vacuum it opens at in there?)- holley carb right?

I have petronix in there and it's set up with what my book suggested and also according to petronix help line. It's a rochester 2gv carb.

On the Rochester there is a step up spring assy coming out of the airhorn, this opens the power valve at lower vacuum. Might be hanging up or have debris in power valve.

Do you plugs look lean? Bottom line if your timing is ok you are lean

I just went out and turned ignition on. The choke opens but not very smooth. My dizzy came with 24° .at 3500 rpm full advance. Plus my 10 btdc

In regards to the power valve spring, if there ever was water in the float bowl that caused the spring to rust then it will be weakened and will result in a lean out at full throttle.

you should be OK at 34 degrees total advance with a short-stroked motor

if your fuel checks out, try 8 degrees base timing. try to be about 32 degrees total advance by 3000 RPM. you need to verify that you are getting 24 degrees advance and not more.
