Took boat out today and as I was heading back to launch...everything going smooth at about 3000 rpm and all of a sudden it seemed like it popped out of gear...stopped boat . After seeing nothing visual I tried taking off again and it ran like normal...no.issue...at dock checked prop...looks the same as when I set out..any ideas

Prop hub or coupler ? although I dont think they would reset...are you using the older style pressed in prop hub?

possible it kicked out of gear. I don't have enough experience to tell you how to diagnose if the drive isn't staying in gear under load, some others on here do...

guessing that anything broken would mean metal in the oil , drain the oil and check.

It's a turning point prop with replaceable hub. If something broke I can't see it being fine again 2 min later

Guess it did pop out of gear, check your lower shift cable and shift foot

i have the service manual #6 that covers the gear box , not much in there that will cause one to jump out of gear unless something broke.

in gear @3K rpm that shift cable should be solid in the rod collector.
at this point i would do as alldodge suggests and take a look at the condition of that lower cable , measure the adjustment etc ..

only thing left is the shift rod housing may be worn where the rod goes through .
