ford 351 omc 235 outdrive heating problem

I started my 351 ford 235 omc outdrive at the house with the hose hooked up, ran great. ( no cooling problems ) took it to the lake and it ran well. but after about 10 min the heat gauge started to rise at low speed. So I gave it some gas and it came down to normal, thought it was going to be OK but then it started to rise again at all speeds so I turned it off. Do you think the impeller is bad or what?

I just went out and looked at the outdrive and found that the hose cap was left off after testing it at the house, do you think that it may have been sucking air though the hose inlet and not sucking enough water?

Likely coming out the hose fitting on the trunion. That fitting is actually after the water pump impeller.

So is that the fitting you hook the hose to when you are starting it at home? and if so it would be pumping part of the water out that fitting and not going to the motor right.... Sorry I'm a new to the old omc.....

What is a hose cap? Left off after testing? I have the same set up and problem.

Yes you need the hose cap on....I did the same thing and once tha cap was back on the overheating stopped.
