I have a Ford 460 that spun the main bearing due to water coming in the exhaust. I am installing a new short block. What type of cam is reccomended for a 26' heavy deep V boat with a berkley pump? Thanks for any help that you can provide.

Re: Ford 460 rebuild cam question

Your best bet would be to contact someone like http://www.cranecams.com/
or http://keitheickert.com/products/Engine_Parts/comp-cams.htm

These people do this for a living and know exactly what should run in front of a pump.

It also depends on whether you have riser type exhaust or dry stacks. The wrong cam with riser type exhaust could destroy the engine the first time out.

I agree, Crane Cams has never let me down.
Contact them, tell them your situation, they'll have a cam for you.

If you search this forum there was another thread last year where we found a $75 dollar one at Summit for another 460 rebuild....

This is not a cheap rebuild ......I'm not sure I'd make the decision to buy the cheapest cam for this engine...... He needs to get the correct cam and matching lifters for his application.

Re: Ford 460 rebuild cam question

can't knock cheap as far as I'm concerned... of course it has to be the right part but a micrometer and a googling of part numbers can probably verify what's coming out of the 460....
I was recommending searching because in the last discussion, we discovered the $75 cam was the same as the one coming out that had given good service as I recall..

Summit has a marine COMP brand cam for $126... might be the same one discussed last time, worth checking to see if it matches the one that came out in profile and specs...

You will need the casting numbers from your block. Ford significantly changed the 460 (7.5L) in 1993. The "new" 460 was designated "Power Improved" and it really was.

Re: Ford 460 rebuild cam question

I was really suggesting that he be somewhat careful in cam selection. As you can see in my sig, I had a 460 in my boat. I removed it for rebuild because the camshaft had several flat lobes on it.(with only about 300 hrs or so on it!) I suspect that the previous rebuilder either didn't properly break in the cam or didn't select proper lifters...or maybe my brother (the previous owner) didn't change the oil frequently enough or use the "right" oil etc....

I fixed it by replacing EVERYTHING!!!!!! (that's of course, another story!!);)
