OK, the year is 1998.
Ford Explorer XLT 4 door was available in 4x4 and AWD.

Was it also available in 2x4? ?

[colour=blue]No, yes, maybe. That's the year that the bottom of the range Mountaineer first offered 2wd, I think that the two door explorer did also, not the XLT.

Thanks guys.
I did a search for 2wd's after I posed the question, and found quite a few for sale.

1998 was available in 2WD, AWD and 4WD.

It depended on the engine.

5.0L V-8 was offered with AWD and 2WD.

4.0L V-6 was offered with 4WD and 2WD.

I'd like to apologize in advance for taking a crap in your thread roscoe. :)

I have a 1998 Explorer 2 Door. It's a piece of crap. Both seat recliner handles have broken off. The display on the radio has went black. The rear wiper lifts itself off the glass as it makes it arc so that it only wipes where it starts and ends. The AC quit. The slightest bump on either rear tire is amplified exponentionally and shakes the "cab" violently. And the newest "feature" it's developed is the drivers side door is permantly locked. My '99 750 Honda Shadow has a higher trade-in value. Other than that it's a great vehicle. :p

My next ride will be a Toyota Tacoma and ride it I shall, until the wheels fall off of it.

Mines a 4.0L V-6.

I bought a new 2X4 Sport model in 1993. I liked it at first but the longer I had it the less I liked it. Tranny went at 73K. I was happy to get rid of it a year and a half ago.

Re: Ford Explorer model info

Well, crap on my thread all you want. :D

I'm looking for a cheap backup vehicle as my current backup is now 20 years old and I am losing confidence in it. Will only put <3000 miles on it a year, and would like it to be able to tow the boat if needed. Explorers are a dime a dozen around here.

The whole 2x4 issue came up when I stopped to look at a vehicle.
I pulled into the guys driveway where he had a for sale sign on the Explorer.
I asked him if it was 4x4. He looked at me like I was an idiot and said " Its an xlt, they're all 4x4." I was pretty sure he was wrong, but wanted to confirm.

i386 Most common radio problem in most fords is that they go black. There is a replaceable bulb in the display that will fix that.

The AWD models will have no dash switch. The AWD was only available with the 5.0L V-8 in 1998.

The 4WD models will have a dash switch to go from 2WD to 4WD.

XL, XLT, Limited, Eddie Bauer have nothing to do with the drivetrain.

Right you are DWJ, but only certain drivetrains were available on certain models.

Found a great site the other night.
It lists what engines and drive systems were available in each trim level.

http://www.carsdirect.com/research/specs?cat=1&make=FO&modelid=87&acode=USA80FOS101A0&year=1998

For example, AWD was not available on the Sport or XL models.
And the 160hp version of the v6 was not available on the Eddie Bauer or Limited models, only the 205hp v6 and the v8.

It even shows the different stock tire sizes and wheel choices for the different trim levels.

roscoe,

You're right. I was speaking 4-door models only. The Sport, as you know, is the 2-dr.

XL's are pretty hard to find. Most, not all, were 2WD and fleet only. The pushrod V-6 was used in the Sport. The XL 4-dr had the twin cam (205).

The v-8 was only 225, as I recall but a lot more torque and allot more fuel.
