hello guys. in the process of buying a 14ft boat with a 2 litre ford pinto engine coupled to a jet unit. ive been wondering what sort of performance this might give.the engine is around 90/100hp so the power to weight shouldnt be too much problem .but ive never had a jet unit to play with. is there anything particular i should be looking for problem wise? is there a site dedicated to jet boats ? any help would be great.ive always found this site fantastic for outboards but not sure about the jet stuff so please help phill. a dedicated uk reader

i have spent a lot of time on and 18 ft donzi that had a berkeley jet drive and it really lost all the things that made it a DONZI

all jet drives use huge amounts of petro compared to a simalar prop powered boat

is this boat a factory orginal or home built?

tommays

jets have quirks that prop guys never dream of. never seen the 2.0 as marine OMC used the 2.3 for a bit. I have seen several 3.0 GM's with jets. jets still require miant and slow speeds in shallow water can kill them.

today's jets are just as efficient or better as sterndrives. new designs make steering without power better that the "old" ones. no "sandlock in shallow water.as per pinto 2.3 i have made big power from them (non marine).the dif from 2.0 to 2.3 is only the cylinder head. just my 2 cents.

6 gph in my 18 foot with a 4.3 jet and 7-8 gph in my buds 20 foot jet with a zz4 fast burn 5.7 gm crate motor. might have to put outdrives on these gas hogs because of the 2.50 a gallon gas prices. what do you expect the gph to go down to with an outdrive? 1 or 2 gph? i am not going to like paying attention to water depth (can't see it-drive over it, now),or pulling out more than a foot of winch cable on the trailor.( won't be able to power on without dinging the prop.) i guess i will just have to find time for all the extra maintainance i don,t have now. (impeller replacement, pulling drive to inspect and grease u joints, alignment, gear lubes, shift cables, bellows, etc.)

the right drive for the right place

your jet will be as unhappy on a rough long island sound as my sterndrive would running a shallow river

tommays

the difference between the 2.0 and 2.3 can't be the cylinder heads. That might be a difference but a cylinder head doesn't change bore and stroke, only the compression ratio
