Forgot to grease driveshaft splines...

So I changed my impeller today, and realized when I was finished that I had forgot to grease my driveshaft splines and I had installed the rubber plug/boot on top of the driveshaft upside down (actually I've been doing it upside down for years I just didn't know it till I found a picture of how it should look)

Considering that it took me over an hour and several near nervous breakdowns to get the L/U back on I am reluctant to take it off again anytime soon.

Do you think I should drop it just to grease the splines and fix the boot, or should there be enough grease on the crank shaft to suffice. Also what is the purpose of the boot, I've heard of people running without them, I run in freshwater exclusively so I don't know how important that boot is.

Lol, I feel for you, don't you hate asking the sorts of questions when you already know in your heart what the correct answers is? ;)

Upside down shouldn't matter all that much. There is grease up there and I'd not worry too much about it.J

OHHH! Don't listen to Jerry! In 30 seconds of running, that shaft is going to seize solid and you will never get it out again! And then, 30 seconds later, the engine will self destruct.

NOT! Just funning you. What Jerry said.

The boot just helps to prevent water from splashing up into the splines and eventually rusting the crankshaft to the driveshaft. Works either way, but a little better the correct way--tapered side up. If you grease the splines well, you don't even need it.
