Depends on what you removed.
1. You removed the complete drive and split it on the bench. Firstly, you probably bent the 'shoe' on the bottom of the upper shift shaft. You need to check that and squeeze it back into shape with a pair of vice grips, if necessary. Then put the shifter in forward and proceed as normal (drive in forward also).
2. You dropped the gear housing without removing the drive shaft housing from the boat. This is the easy one. Just move the shifter into forward, make sure the intermediate shift shaft moves into the right position with it, and fit the gear housing back on as normal (also in forward)...
