Have you gone on-line and up-dated drivers?
that is the first step.

Wouldn't the drivers come with the drive software?

if it's a dvd r, then you can't write to a disc that's why nero didn't recognized the drive. Nero will looks for a writable drive only.

Re: Format cd's; dvd's

Let's start with the basics. Look in My Computer and see if you see the drive. The CDROM/CDWR/DVD drive will often be drive D (but not always).

If you see the drive, try inserting a known good CD and see if it will read. Your Windows CD or some other store bought CD will serve well for this purpose.

Assuming you installed Nero that came with the drive we can go to step two. Some computers will require you to use the analog CD audio cable. It goes from the drive to your sound card. They look like this:

*Sound cards/drivers that support digital audio extraction don't require this cable.

That may solve your audio problem. Often, people just forget to connect this.

Most applications can't write directly to optical drives by themselves like they would a hard drive. Nero probably came with "packet writing" software. Once this is loaded, you can write directly to CD. I prefer not to use this method. If it were me, I would backup my quicken data to a temporary "staging area", then use Nero to burn (and verify) it to disc.

Also check your drive's documentation and make sure it supports the media you bought. DVDs come in a lot of flavors.

There are a lot opinions on this. I'm just giving you mine.

Thanks to all. I do have to use Nero to write to the disk. I have installed the analog sound cable. I will figure out the voice on the dvd. The drive does support Windows 2000 professional.
My son the guru has flown the coup to make his fortune and left the old man on his own.
I purchased this drive so that I would not have to change so many disks when backing up some files. The plans of mice and men....

I386, I will try out your idea once I can digest and fully understand it.

Pretty common problem for the older computer not to see the cd player, my old Packard Bell did that, even installed a new Mad Dog mutil Media, still had some problems, but I don't use that computer any more. Sometimes a program will not let you write to a cd for storage. I raninto that this weekend doing my taxes on Turbo Tax. Had to put it PDF file to do a back up for my records.
