Working on a boat for a friend. 2001 Evinrude 250 , We got the boat all rigged and set up controls working, great and we get on the water and Forward is Reverse and Reverse is forward. Throttle worked great. The need for the boat is substantial as its for public safety. Any suggestions on what needs changed. The controller is a Side mount, NEW OMC/BRP 2 years old at most.

Thanks

Controller is similiar to a brp 5006180 Surface mount. Need some suggestions as we bought used and placed on our boat replacing an older 1984 235

Sounds like you got the shift cable on the wrong arm in the box. The cable has to be pulled fwd for fwd and pushed back for reverse.

Could this be? We didnt have the controller apart, and worked fine on the old 235

Ok, Looking there now. Just was trying to figure out the WHY this works this way as I have to explain it to him. So All I need is a Counter Rotation prop?

By the sounds of it yep. What is the model number of the outboard? That is the surest way to figure it out unless someone changed out the lower unit and put a counter rotating L/U on it. If the first letter after the 250 in the model number is a C it is a counter rotating outboard.

E250 FC So yes I am going to say its counter rotation. A prop change will fix this then?

Re: Forward and Reverse are backwards

You might have been kidding but I think that is his issue. If nobody messed with the controls and I don't even think you could get the outboard to change gears or even to started if you mixed up the throttle and gear selector cables at the motor. That is why I asked him to check his model # and he has the magical C which is for counter rotating. There is no way that engine would have started up the wrong way and was running backwards. The only logical conclusion is they bought a used outboard that most likely came off of a boat running twins.

Re: Forward and Reverse are backwards

Look at the very end of the prop shaft and if you see a "C" or "CR" stamped in it, it is a counter rotator g/c. Don't put a counter rotator prop on a standard rotation g/c just to make it go fwd 'cause you'll tear up the g/c.

I would just take a piece of masking tape and write a big F on it and place it over the R on the box and vise versa. :D
