I have a 3.0LX Mercruiser in a 1995 Caravelle Fish and Ski. Is there a secret to engaging when transfering from forward to reverse. The idle is plenty low but I still get a grinding only when engaging.

Check the condition and level of the gearcase lube.
Other than that, expect some racket if you switch while underway. If vessel is moving, the prop will be turned by water passing it in neutral even...Not much you can do about that.

kyfisher,

That drive has a clutch dog type of shifting mechanism. Trying to shift it SLOWLY will only cause damage.

Make your shifts quick and price. It WILL clunk when it goes into gear. That is normal.

Djohns has it.Shift briskly into gear from neutral and when shifting directions for mooring and such hesitate in neutral momentarily before shifting.Shifting gently will only wear away at the gear teeth as well and cause more grinding.Good luck.
