I have a 1986 115hp tower of power with a bad forward gear. I also have a lower unit that supposidly belongs to a 1990 115. I'm wondering if I can pretty much rebuild my lower unit with the 1990 one.

A 1990 is a totally different unit, no parta will interchange. Also anytime you swap gears on a Merc you will need to check shimming

That sucks. Do you know anyone who would have spare parts. I would hate to have to buy another forward gear and clutch when I have this one in perfect condition

Ask the question on ebay or find an old Merc dealer who probably has a lot of "parts" engines lying around or better yet has guys gut oldies for their usable parts and has then shelved and inventoried. Both are 2:1 ratio but as Fazt said, totally different lower units and the shims are important....need to get the right amount and that takes a gyzmo gauge you have to stick in the rear of the LU gearbox to measure the clearance between the F gear and the the drive shaft pinion.
