forward is reverse 7.5 hp

I replaced the impeller on a 1969 Merc 7.5hp
Had a hard time reattaching the lower unit,anyway long story short
pumps fine ,but reverse is forward and forward is reverse.
Can this be fixed without dropping the lower unit again?

Sorry but no, your shift shaft and the shifter are out of sync, it has to come down again. Also be aware that your reverse lockout is now probably out of whack too. Your motor should lock down in reverse and no other gear, that gear goes back on about 10 ways and should be at the highest step when in reverse.

Thanks hotrod, I was afraid that would be the answer.
So I would be best to shift into reverse,remove lower unit then shift to forward and replace lower unit. Correct? Will that fix the reverse lockout also?
