forward & reverse issues

i recently changed the impeller on my 73 johnson 115hp. the things runs great now but when i put in the water yesterday, it wouldnt go forward. it worked a little in reverse but not much at all. but nothing at all in forward. got it back home & put the ear muffs on it & put it in gear & the prop is turning when i put in both gears. why is it not pushing my boat in the water.
please help.

sounds as if the shift rod got turned, changing the shift rod height, or the connection was made incorrectly. or cables reconnected incorrectly.

thanks for your help. im pretty sure its not a cable issue. i feel your right with your shift rod diagnosis. to fix that issue, will that mean removing the lower unit again?
