Found a boat on Ebay that will probably go cheap and if it does, might go get it. Custom Craft will be restored first and I will always keep that boat, but a 15'3" runabout with fins on the back is not as versatile as I would like... Anyway, due to the Custom Crafts construction, I bought way too much fabric from US Composits ( Probably use all the 1708, but surely not the mat or cloth ) and also a couple sheets extra of plywood, so it's the perfect excuse to do another boat

Anyway, it's a Bayliner 1950BR and has both bow and cockpit covers, a Broken/ not running OMC 3.0L, and a rough interior, but not as rough as most Bayliners of the 80's.. Is this worth doing over? I have actually wanted this style Capri but most I have found are $3k+ for boats that need work. I'm thinking Mercruiser 2.5/3.0L, whatever kind of boat I can get with that for cheap, or even a 4.3 if I could find a donor. Save the OMC 3.0L if it is good for my dads Starcraft Offshore V-18 if the engine is still good ( his boat has a 120 Merc ). Part the rest of the outdrive.. I plan to have the Custom Craft done for next summer, so I would still have at least 1 boat to use during the time.. If I get this boat, I will not be spending much. I have that 'figure' in my head and it's based solely on what the trailer is worth minus disposal of the boat

you must ENJOY the work... I can't imagine taking it on knowing it was rotten if it were given to me and all the supplies came with it..... Then again I guess I don't have the love for that style of boat that you do so that might be part of my hesitation.... I do think that if the hull was dry and solid (prolly not really likely) it might be a worthwhile project but pretty hard to know ahead of time.... the price you have in your head however makes it less of a gamble and more of an experiment anyhow... can't really lose much more than your time.

Bayliner + Broken OMC + rough interior + prospect of rot = worth it?

That is some tough calculus. YMMV.

... Stringer drive (I'm pretty sure): I'd probably pass on it. If you coulda' converted to Merc - then it was a "maybe."

Nope. It's a Cobra.

I actually like this kind of work, and I love boating. NADA value on one of these is $3,140 on a trailer, so I would have roughly $3k to work with to get it where I want and actually break even. Think that can be done?. I know the Bayliners are probably the worst boats of the 80's, and they are obsolete in just about any drive configuration they were available with. Stern drive, L drive or outboard, but oddly enough, That style Capri is always a boat that I have been a fan of, which is probably why I'm even considering getting it... It is a Cobra drive

Price if I do get it will be below $400, with all factors considering.

If you mean he gives you $400 to haul it away -- negotiate to at least $500.

Re: Found another boat, MBS kicking in.. worth it?

Another thought I had, was if the OMC 3.0L ran with a little work, couldn't I get a Mercruiser transom assembly, Mercruiser 3.0L bellhousing/ coupler, riser and manifold and then hook the engine up to the OMC controls, or is that not possible/ need more than that to work?

Was 1986 a crossover year from Volvo-OMC? I have found a few 1986 Capri BR's with the side windows, but only 1986's. I wouldn't mind a Volvo if I found a cheap one.. It's looking like someone wants the boat in question more than I do, which may be a good thing

That boat looks to be an '88, give or take a year. Definitely not an '86. The transom cutout is the same as used for the MerCruiser Alpha; I think some of the bolt holes are different, though.

Yep, it is an '88.. Wish there were other crossover years for Volvo. I know at least some of the '86's were styled the same, tho the gelcoat color is different and possibly different shaped hulls... But even if this is not ' the boat ', If I find another and it's Cobra drive equipped, it would still be slated for the Mercruiser drive replacement, even operational as the boat would be gone thru anyway and Mercruiser is what I know

I dunno man.... I have $4000 in my 28' MonteCarlo including the trailer...... If you want to do a $3000 project, I'd set the sights a lot higher... Instead of hoping to break even how bout trying to come in at under 20% of the finished value

Yea, I was just going to post back that I have decided to pass on it. It is a nice hull and all, but when it comes down to it, the hull is the only good part. I could make it a really nice boat, but I could have a nicer boat for the same money if I shop more..

Get the boat you want with the style of motor/outdrrve you feel good about and then as a boat enthusiast rebuild that sucker into the boat of your dreams that will last for many decades to come. To heck with the brand snobbery, it's what you want and like that matters.

I'm speaking as a fellow boat head with a driveway that looks like a marina. Restored Sea Nymph, tore down Starcraft and rotten Chris Craft. I'm sure some guys would scoff at my choices too but their mine and so's the money.

To each his own, but I've parted out or plain out dumped boats in that shape or even better. They don't sell, even when fixed around here. Powertrain parts are hard to find and expensive, Bayliner hulls and decks aren't known for their longevity, and its on a fairly basic bunk trailer. If it were me I'd find a better boat to dump my time and money into.
The way I look at it is that since I'm also into cars, I put Bayliner on par with a Yugo or Renault Fuego of that era.
Go find something better built from the start and have something to be proud of when your done.
If you have ever cut up a boat hull, you would most definitely know what I mean when I say find a better boat to work with, and those years were the worst of all when it came to Bayliners. No matter what you do to it and how much you spend, its still an entry level boat with very limited resale value.

Re: Found another boat, MBS kicking in.. worth it?

Well, the boat that I'm currently restoring was kind of the same quality. Builders were experienced wooden boat builders, switched to Fiberglass in '58 and built boats till '64. I don't know if they didn't have a clue what they were doing or were building cheap for profits. They used an unconventional hull design which does not use a full plywood deck and left lots of resin starved roving up in the bow. It's a cool looking boat but will take lots of rework to bring it back, nothing impossible tho. Anyone who would have bought the boat would have gotten it for the motor and trailer and trashed the hull, but it was my grandfathers since new, so I'm restoring it to as original as current products allow.

The only thing I really like about the Bayliner is the window arrangement and the gauges are cool looking. Seems like I can sacrafice those for a better boat.. I know the Bayliner was chopper gun laid and not well at that.

I didn't mean a better brand as much as a better goal... If you plan to do months of work to end up with a $3000 boat I would want to be in it for $300 total or less.

I knew what you meant, Searching more, I'm finding better boats that have a better layout and older boats in better shape.. If I get a boat with a Mercruiser stern drive, and then find a Bayliner Capri I'd like more for cheap enough, than I'v got the perfect deal at that point..

The bayliner in question will go to about $375-400 most likely.

I would thing that on the east coast there would be plenty of project boats around... even remnants of sandy still

I bought my 28'er a few years ago in new york for $543 through ebay BTW
