So I found a really nice one, early 70's 75 hp, that is currently running and looks to be in great condition, with working power tilt and trim! He says he uses it every weekend and is selling for $450. What do you guys think? This is the best deal I've come across, of course I'll still do a compression test. He's offered to water test it on the boat that the motor is on now. Just FYI I'm buying only the engine for my boat. Heres some picsPicture 049.jpgPicture 048.jpgPicture 050.jpg

Working power trim alone is worth 300-400 bucks. The engine seems to be in relatively good condition. It is apparently a 76-78 two piece lower unit, which is nice, but about 3 MPH slower than the one piece lower unit engines. Props are 18 spline, thrust pin drive held on by the tailcone and cotter pin. Props are becoming a little difficult to find but you do see some coming up on ebay. The ignition is Motorola with most likely electric eye distributor--relatively trouble free but if the Motorola box fails, you can get an after-market replacement from CDI. If it runs well, 450 would be a fair price.

You would want to replace the transom clamps with the more modern ones with the holes for a steering tube in them. This will allow you to use a steering tube and return fitting for better steering.

If you watch my video Tutorial, the three cylinder engine is (I think) a similar 85 with the Motorola Electronic ignition.

Looks really nice, if the hood not being changed it is a 72 or 73 year model. It has the top cover latch and decal says 70Hp.
In 74 it was rated as 75Hp and the cover latch was modified and mounted in the lower part of the hood.
I also think that the electronic distributor first was on the 74 year model .

Grab it it looks bloody good from the pics, compression is the key and an on water test with a few holes shots should see if it is running ok, also check the temp and water being pumped, oh and lower unit oil would be a good check to just to make sure there is no water or metal filings. Looks like it has an after market temp sender on it as well, which was probably for a gauge rather than the buzzer which comes with them.

Nordin: Look at the midleg and lower unit. I believe they only made that tapered one from '76 tp'78. Earlier lower units dropped straight down at the rear and had a shorter anti-vent plate. They also had a six inch long 12 point bolt under the exhaust snout.

Re: Found another Chrysler!

Sorry Frank if I do not understand what you mean, but from my experience this engine is mixed up with different parts from different years factory made BUT I do believe you.
The hood is from 72-73 maybe 71.The decals is earlier then 74 and the hood latch is top mounted. In 74 there was no 70Hp it was rated 75 Hp in 74 and the latch was bottom mounted.
The midleg rear cover look as from 74 and up. 73 and earlier did not have the little snout it just had a hole.

The LU is a 2 piece and look as my LU that I have on my 1966 75Hp, 1969 70Hp, 1970 70Hp, 1976 75Hp and 1977 75Hp.

YES, now I know what you mean. I have checked my factory prospectus (have 68, 69, 70, 73, 76, 77 and 78 year model).
The 73 did have the tapered LU style, also the snout at midleg cover and top latch. 74 it was rated 75Hp and bottom latch for the hood.
1970 did not have the tapered LU, 71 and 72 maybe, but I do not really know. 1970 had a white background at decal "Chrysler", 71 I do not know but 1972 was black.
This engine looks like a 72 or 73.
BUT check the ID tag to be sure.

Re: Found another Chrysler!

Well, live and learn! I thought they only made the tapered two piece LU for about three years. But, I don't have literature, I only infer by what I have seen. I do know that in 79 they went to the one piece lower unit and a little later went to Prestolite ignition. As good looking as that two piece tapered lower unit is, the one piece still is better looking. AND, many might not know this but Chrysler did make an extra long (25) shaft around 1979-80. I have a 140 extra long one piece lower unit with electronic distributor Motorola ignition.

Re: Found another Chrysler!

Frank, just an information about the Prestolite system. This system was the retrofit kit for the MAG II system. Chrysler changed into this during warrenty BUT I do not know when that was (I Think I have read somewhere it was in 1978). I Think you already knows this.

I have had a 1974 or 75 year 60Hp twincarb engine, not really sure of the year because I sold this engine a couple of years ago. That engine had Prestolite ign.system. If it was retrofit during warrenty or not...............nobody knows.

In my 1977 prospectus the 4 cyl. engines (105Hp and up) and even the 65Hp has the 1 piece LU. 3cyl. engines 75Hp and 90Hp has the 2 piece LU.
The 1978 prospectus showes 65Hp 1 piece LU, 75Hp 2 piece, 85Hp "Charger" and all 4 cyl. engines 1 piece LU.
