While draining the exaust manifolds for winterization today in my 93 Volvo 501B, I found BOTH sides to be clogged up with tiny rusty pieces of metal. I would guess it's from the exaust minifolds, and that it's probably normal. I flushed them out, and every's clear now, but thought I'd check it out here to be sure if there's anything to be worried about, or something I should do.
I do fill with antifreeze for winterizations.

When i drained mine last year i got rust also_One side i had to poke a wire up in the hole to get the water to flow.
From what i have read on the forums and in my manual a little rust is normal.

Rust flakes out of the exhaust manifolds are just part of the normal deterioration of the beasts. Ya get more in salt water and less with freshwater. There is a product that you can introduce into your mani's and motor that is supposed to reduce the corrosive effects of salt.

I would definitely fill them with antifreeze for the winter. One is that antifreeze is a rust inhibitor and two, if there were any little pockets of water that did not drain (motor and mani's) you would be protected.

Back in the early 90's, being new to an area with occasional periods of subfreezing, I opened up all the petcocks and walked away. Big mistake. Next spring the motor was cracked and both mani's were toast.

thanks guys, didn't think it was anything to really worry about, but thought I'd just check in here ;) Just strange that this was the first time in the 3 years I've winterized it.

I'd pop the risers and have a good look in there. Man's need periodic replacement, and maybe your due.

rust is normal. thats not to say you have nothing to worry about however.

down here in miami, we pop the risers off every spring to check them, and replace them every 3 to 4 years. once you get a leak in the manifolds or risers, there is no place for the water to go except into the cylinders.

the bad part.

the metal between the exhaust ports on your heads and the water jackets is THINNER than the metal in your manifolds/risers. pin holes there is the number two reason for saltwater intrusion in an engine. number one is the manifold/risers.

storeing them with antifreeze is a good idea. i pump antifreeze into mine every time i park it. use a pump to pump it out before going out and reuse it after flushing.

on average, we dont expect to get more than 6 to 8 good years out of a motor before it becomes an anchor. the price of mixing cast iron and salt water.

I keep seeing that, BUT the pink safe stuff has NO anti rust ingredients at all.
