hello all.
1972 johnson 25hp. runs excellent trolling speed, and excellent top speed (when it finally gets there) accel or de-cel is terible. misses, chugs, etc. have done everything ie gas, carb, plugs, etc but no change. this weekend with the cover off, i put her at full throttle (it normally takes from 10-30 seconds to get to full rpm) while it was trying to accellerate, i reached under the flywheel and lifted UP on the timing plate, and she took off like a rocket. i tried this 25 times and EVERY time, it accelerated awesome when the plate was lifted. i assume i have to pull the flywheel, so i will go do that now, but whats next to look for? thanks

Where do you lift the stator plate, in the front, Left/right side from boat, or back ?

Did you touch the wires from the stator plate?

Wires can be internally broken and give bad connection when stator plate turns. The distance from trigger to magnets can be too big.

hi gdane
i played with all the wires first and nothing changes. i lifted the stator plate on the left side where it hits the shifter stop and it ran like a rocket. i havnt pulled the flywheel yet as i had to repair some front end damage on my truck (darn gravel roads) anything to try before removing the flywheel?

Howdy, LoganMallory.

Yes. Before you pull the flywheel get a manual or study the one you have as though pulling the flywheel is your semester final.

Good luck. :)

hi jb
i have a manual and have studied it, but it doesnt really saymuch about a loose stator plate. i have already pulled th flywheel a few weeks ago to see if i could see anything wrong, but couldnt. i noticed the plate was loose then, but didnt know it wasnt supposed to be. the manual says there are 4 screws holding it on 2 that go right through and 2 that go through coils. maybe these are loose, but then the plate would go DOWN more! should i put some spacers below the plate or is there another way?

okay . pulled the flywheel. everything was tight underneath ie all screws, coils, etc. pulled the 4 holding screws for the statorplate and removed. alot of grease around all moveable parts. all wires look great. nothing looked worn. put the stator back on and it tightened as best as possible. stator still is as loose as before (is it supposed to be?). what else to check/look for please help!! desperate!

There are stator repair kits available for most of the 2 cylinder motors. Have you dealer find them in an older service bulletin that gave the part numbers for them.

With the flywheel off, grab the stator plate, there should be little to no movement, up or down. Do what ever you need to, to tighten it up(Washers, etc...). Also, just a few day ago I took apart a motor and clean the stator,points,condensors,etc... and put it back together, only I forgot to tighten the stator plate the motor ran good it just didn't have any power. The flywheel was rubbing the magnet just enough to screw things up. Most likely when you lifted up on the stator plate, you relieved it from rubbing.
