Found water in the bellows.......some questions

Started to winterize the boat this afternoon and of course, found water in the bellows. I bought the boat new the middle of August, so I was planning on replacing the bellows anyway since I have no idea the last time they were changed, however, I came across some things I need those with more experience to chime in on:

1. There was a gasket between the drive and pivot housing - I was under the impression the only sealing surface was the water port seal?
2. When I went to remove the U-Joint bellows, I could not find any retainer holding the bellow to the housing. Instead, I found a long coiled wire running the length of the bellows - Is that supposed to be there?

I am planning to replace the gimbal bearing as well, even though it feels okay so I don't have to worry about it.

I have attached some pictures showing the general condition of the u-Joints and the coiled wire. The u-joints look and feel good to me, but I am not sure what to look for.

Gasket shouldn't have been there. Sounds like a former OMC owner had it before you.

The wire should be there, it holds the bellows away from the ujoints. The bellows sets in a notch in the pivot housing, and when installed the nose of the drive housing holds the bellows tightly in the notch and seals the drive to the bellows.

Will the new bellows have this wire already installed? I don't see it anywhere on any of the parts diagrams.

Yes, no reason to remove them.
