1996 Four winns fling with 90HP motor.

So I'm trying to get this thing started this year. Got a new boat so haven't had a lot of time to play with the fling but from what I can tell it's not getting any fuel. It ran fine last year when winterized. I have the factory service manual but it's a pretty big piece of junk. Not much useful info for troubleshooting. Spark plugs are getting spark.

Does anyone know how the fuel system works? Basically, what do I need to do to prime it? Is there anything else besides pushing the key in before starting it? I've tired pushing the key for as little as 3 seconds and as long as 30. It doesn't seem to make a difference. Not a hint of fuel anywhere to be smelled. I did add a few gallons to the tank so I know it has gas in it.

Does pushing the key in trigger a pump somewhere? I do hear clicking somewhere in the engine bay when I push it in, but that is all I hear.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I think the clicking is the primer solenoid. Try removing the small tubes that come off of the solenoid and go to the carbs, engage the solenoid and see if gas is forced out of the lines. If fuel does not come out, you might have a solenoid problem.

Should be a small Black Button in the engine compartment located next to the storage bin. pump untill hard, prime with key, should fire right up.

Pushing the key in before starting does absolutely nothing on that motor. You need to push the key in while you crank to run the fuel pump to pressurize the fuel for the primer solenoid to do its job. That's covered in the Fuel System section of your service manual under "Description of Fuel System"

Coast Guard regulations preclude primer bulbs on inboards, though a lot of people add them on their own.

BTW, If you push the knob in the center of the control handle, you can override the neutral safety for an easier cold start.

Interesting. The mechanic at the marina told us to hold it in for 10 seconds before turning it over. We found that if it hasn't been run for a few weeks, holding it in even longer makes for an easier start. I did know about the neutral safety for cold starting.

Also, I can't find anything at all in the owners manual or factory service manual about a fuel pump. That was the first thing I started looking for when I realized it wasn't getting any fuel.

The VRO pump is in a cylindrical container next to the engine. It's enclosed like that for safety because of the inboard use. If the oil tank is still in use, you will find the hose leads to the VRO/OMS fuel pump where it merges with the gasoline.

The fuel pump is mechanical and works off the pulse created by the movement of the number 3 cylinder; you will find the outlet for the pulse in the bypass cover on the lower starboard cylinder.

Most of the parts are shown in the complete TurboJet Diagrams on line at the BRP parts catalog site. You can access them by selecting the TurboJet item from the picklist where Evinrude is the default. http://shop.evinrude.com/

I have this same boat and motor pushing the key in while starting is the primer, but first you need to pump the warm up nob until it gets hard located where i posted earlier if your boat is good to go it should fire right up you can allways go to www.fourwinns.com and download the starting procedures for the 1994 fling.

So I pumped up the primer button you mentioned and got it running in the driveway at the cottage with the garden hose adapter. Took it over to the boat launch and it wouldn't start. Brought it home with me today so I can play with it some more in the driveway. Gonna disconnect some fuel lines and see if anything is blocked or restricted. Of course I forgot the FSM at the cottage...

Just an update on this. It turns out the person that winterized the boat at the marina last year got 2 of the spark plug wires reversed so only 2 cylinders were firing. I pulled the plugs just to see what they looked like and 2 were covered in oil. That's when I noticed the wires seemed to be reversed. I replaced the plugs and it fires up fine now. Thanks for the help and all the useful info. :)
