Hi, I'm am new to the forms , and newer to the boating world.

I have a 1990 four winns 225 sundowner with the 351 , 5.8 cobra motor , 550 hours.

The boat runs great, but if you don't let the boat warm up about 1/4 of the way , and you go to move it wants to stall out unless after you get into drive and your quick with the throttle. Is that normal or not ?

are you saying, you jump in, turn the key and try to go....then yes, you need to let it warm up a few minutes (normal). boat carbs do not have fast idle cams

or are you saying that you have to give it fuel anytime you shift into gear? (not normal) could be plugged accelerator circuit or idle circuit

I'll put my boat in the water and have whoever is with me fire the boat up and I'll go park the truck. I'll get back, and get ready to go and the boat has run a few minutes or so. Ready for take off, I'll put it in reverse and once in if I'm not pretty quick with the throttle it wants to shut off. It's not a instant shut off , but Maybe few seconds it will shut off. Once it hits fully warmed it's fine.
So I take it out and fishing and I'm parked for a hr or so and I got to move the boat l have to let it warm up for bit. Just didn't know if that was normal or not

you may just need to adjust your choke a bit.

I might lean toward the accelerator pump and/or idle jets float level etc.

Been running my 454 for more than 10 years with the automatic choke disconnected and completely out of the picture and I don't have that problem.

Have you ever rebuilt your carburetor?

Kind of brining up a older topic but I still have the issue. I have a electronic choke ,and my accelerator pump seems to be working fine. As for a idle critic, not sure what that is

This sounds like an automatic choke that's not adjusted correctly.....OR, the idle mixture is not adjusted right (too lean)

Once the engine is warmed up, it should be fine for the rest of the day. I have to help mine along a little when it's cold but it's fine after it warms up a little.

If you're adjusted a little too lean, it will definitely falter when you drop it into gear and the engine is loaded. Your engine should be set to idle at 550-600 in gear (in the water)

I would opt for 550 since the clutch dogs will last longer if the RPM is low when you place it in gear.

If you don't have an OEM OMC service manual, you can go to the following link http://boatinfo.no/lib/omc/manuals/1986-1998omcmanual.html#/0

But I suggest you get one of you don't have it (Seloc or Clymer won't cut it)
