Four winns trailer bearing help

Hello everyone. First off I have read the sticky on here regarding bearing sizes. It didnt help me out. I am trying to replace the bearings on my trailer. Unfortunately they DO NOT have any numbers stamped in the bearings. The trailer is a four winns model 18190. It has a capacity of 5200 lbs. I attempted to bring the bearings over to my local auto parts store to match up, however with this damn virus going around they wouldnt help me. They wouldnt let me into the store, nor would they come outside to help identify. I have been a customer of this store for nearly 30 years. time to take my business elsewhere, like the internet ! I do not have a micrometer to measure the size. The manual for the trailer only gives the lug nut count, hub size, and weight capacity of the trailer. I would guess that the inner bearing is 1 3/4 and the inner might be a 1 1/4, just guessing based on weight capacity. Is there anyway for me to be sure of the sizes so I can buy a complete kit and not worry about having to return it through the mail ? Again, they are not stamped with any numbers, nor do I have a micrometer/ caliper measuring tool. Thanks for any advice during these difficult times, I appreciate it !

Might try an online trailer specialty store (e.g., Google 'trailer' but put an e in front of the word); I am guessing they could help you identify the bearings.

If you have the trailer serial number, go to Four Winns web site, open the parts catalog, type the year and serial number into the proper boxes and it will give you a parts breakdown with numbers. mine also showed timkin numbers.

I just had the same predicament. With current downtime I thought I'd get parts for 2 of my trailers. E-mailed the manufacturer and they replied with dimensions, part numbers and axle dimensions.

Looked them up on the net and the new parts just came today.

I would think Four Winns would be just as helpful.

Regardless, don't hold a grudge against your local store - they are only following Govmt orders and should be reported if they don't.

I happened upon another thread with someone asking a similar question. He made mention of a number stamped in the back of the hub. After a quick inspection I noticed mine had the same number on the hub. I ended up ordering the part recommended by a helping hand on that thread. Still cant get the inner race out of the damn hub. Pounded on it all day to no avail !

FUNTIMES -It is a 2000/2001 Horizon 180. I have both id numbers handy. Pretty sure I have the correct parts coming, however, getting that inner race out is holding me up. With how difficult it has been trying to get that thing out Im wondering how much of a chance I will have at getting it back together. You tube vids make it look pretty easy, but it is most certainly not- its a bear !

mtntrogger , Just for future references, here's a parts guide for a 2002 which is the oldest listed Four Winns boat and trailer for you as it should be about the same and it sometimes may help guide you to a needed part.

Thanks FUNTIMES ! I finally managed to remove the inner race. I ended up using the handle from my 1970's garage jack. Its made of something real heavy and durable. I pounded the end of it with a sledge with the other end on the inside of the race.
I also managed to replace the inner race with the new one. I just used the old race against the new one and hammered in with a 2x4 and sledge. It doesnt go in far enough to trap the old race. However its a different story with the outer race, which I pressed in using a seal press (threaded rod with heavy spacers).

However the thing that has me worried is that the outer race cant go in any further, but it spins. The inner race does not spin. I do remember when I removed the hub, noticing that the outer race did spin then also. I presume its ok, and will plan on finishing the job as planned. If there are issues I will probably need to replace the hub. I will update when I get it back together.

With the issues as described, plus all the pounding you had to do, you "probably" don't need to replace the hub.

Save what parts you bought new and you can be sure aren't damaged, then throw away the hubs and buy new ones.

If you ever saw a boat trailer hub /axle / spindle disintegrate on the interstate at 65 mph there would be no question that safety trumps a coupleabucks every time.

Something is not right. Neither race should spin and since you had so much trouble getting the old races out, something is mismatched. The wrong races or the races spun in the hub and the hub is ruined.

Are you sure the outer race is seated in the hub? It will be pretty deep when seated and you can look from the back through the inner race to see if it's against the seat.
