Frank,
I just put this new starter on a few weeks ago. I have had the boat out three times plus some running in the yard. Today, I came back in early because I was afraid I wasn't going to get it to start again.
Here is what it is doing. Turn key starter spins, bendix kicks out starter will keep spinning. When I got home, I pulled the plugs and tried it. With no load, the bendix stays engaged. I then put a compression gage in to simulate a plug.
It turned until it hit 150 and then the bendix spun out again. This is repeatable.
Can it be I got a bad Bendix with the new starter?
I also noticed that only about 1/2 of the bendix gear is engaging the flywheel.
There are no damaged teeth that I can see.
Regards,
John
