Frayed and Stuck Cable OMC COBRA

I have an 89 Bayliner Trophy with a 3.0 and a cobra outdrive. My shift cable from the engine to the outdrive is frayed and stuck! What would cause this issue? Im replacing the cable this week and I would like to take preventative measures fom this happing again.

The only thing you can do to prevent it is to keep your drive stored in the down position and never use it in salt water. The latter usually isn't an option so do the first.
