I have a 1999 F100 that I just purchased and I've been trying to learn it. It was a neglected motor and I purchased it from a guy who said that it ran good but would occasionally "sputter" due to some bad fuel being sucked into it. I wanted to check out a lot of stuff on it before I even tried to run it. I had doubts because it had a mangled stainless prop on it that the guy told me was aluminum (pictures were not good enough for me to tell and motor was covered in fouling) and the seller did not drain the oil from it for shipping.... among several other things that got me questioning the integrity of the seller and the condition of the motor. The prop shaft is very true, bearings are smooth, and though the gearcase oil was very worn it had no noticable debris or water in the it. The lube was smooth and there was only the slightest fuzz on the plug. I was worried when the prop would not free turn one way when in gear like my 94 70 hp 2 stroke, but soon found out that this was norm. I flushed the gearcase with kerosene before refilling it with fresh oil and it came out good. I changed the oil and filter and found no noticeable contamination. I took the plugs out of the fuel bowls to drain them and they were dry, so I had no clue of the condition inside. It smelled like 6 month old gas like I expected, so I sprayed some engine tuner in the bowls and closed them up for 24 hours. I changed the filter, hooked up the fuel hose and pressurized the system to flush the carbs. Fuel leaked bad around the intake side of the top fuel pump from where the pieces mate. I pulled the output lines from the fuel pumps and sent some OMC engine tuner down the fuel lines to the carbs, cracked the drains and alternated tuner and about 15-20 psi of air while pluging the other fuel line. 8 hours later I put on a new fuel pump and pressurized the fuel bulb. The lower fuel pump had a slight leak that I didn't notice before due to the size of the upper leak but it stopped when I kept priming so I closed up the carb drains and wheeled it out next to my boat for a test run. I couldn't be happier when she fired up. Idled great and after I cleared the hose outlet it pumped water like a champ. It shifts in and out of gear. Is it normal to hear a rythm'd "knocking" noise from the lower end in gear with a low rpm-light load out of water? It goes away when I increase throttle and returns when I drop back down to idle, either gear. When it is neutral I can't put a lot of throttle to it because it will stall and immediately shut down.... I don't have a tach rigged yet so I don't know what range is inducing this. I put it in gear and it throttled up to a higher RPM; I didn't do this for more than a moment and don't want to for obvious reasons. IS THIS A REV LIMIT FUNCTION? IS THE NOISE FROM THE LOWER END NORMAL? I'm hoping that the leak in the fuel pump was letting air in, causing the sputter and that I've already remedied that. But I'll do a carb tear down if I have to. I would like some feedback before I hang it on my boat. I am going to need to weld on to my 20 inch transom to properly fit this x-tra long. I'm concerned about the weight on the bolts if I use the existing bolt pattern and just mounting this motor up off of the transom - running the bolts through the lower holes and having the motor elevated up off of the transom. I just need a few inches to get the motor to clear the ground when it's on the trailer. Suggestions?
