Freeze damage or corrosion?

So I have had a mystery leak on my 91 maxum since I got it this year. It’s spent it’s entire life on the Colorado river system and that water is loaded with minerals. (It kills plumbing in my house I’m sure the boats no different)

when I pulled the out drive( g1 alpha 1) it had a lot of sediment build up in the water outlet so I can only assume the entire system is like that. I snuggled up the exhaust couplers as I could see some mineral trace there from a leak and that took care of most of my problem.

pretty sure this is the culprit,

looks like a crack and a lot of corrosion on the water pump. Is this most likely freeze damage? Or just nasty corrosion. I checked under the manifold as that looks to be a common 3.0 damage area if that the case and it’s clean as can be.

FWIW I can’t reproduce the leak running on muffs, even letting it warm up at the dock it’s all dry, I have to wind the motor up a good bit to get any water in the bilge but it’s never a lot, 1/2 gallon or less. I have a nice pressure tester but not sure how I could adapt it for marine use.

The hose is showing signs of dry rotted and should be replaced.

Replace it and you leak should go away

looks like lack of maintenance

being a 91, the hose long ago needed replacing (they last 10-15 years max) you should be on the 2nd or 3rd hose by now

the paint could simply be chipped. with the hose off, fire up a cordless drill and a wire cup brush and clean it. rattle can paint as needed.

I have the digital ignition, I believe one wire runs to the “brain”

replacing all the rubber is my project for the winter this year. The previous owner changed the oil and that’s about it for annual maintenance so there is some work in order. Also want to replace the two rubber connections on my exhaust outlet.

A wire runs "to" the sender to operate the temp gauge, nothing else EFI or MPI does not have a connection to the temp sender

got some wrench time in today finally, holy corrosion! The hoses are all on order along with the two rubber boots on the exhaust and a new stat. Debating on weather to keep the water pump or not. Never has had an issue with running warm so I may run with it. The hose fittings I hit with the wire brush and tried to smooth out with the cookie cutter, might try a sanding belt for a little further surfacing work. Wife decided we need a camper and not another boat so I’m starting to change my mind set on putting extra cash into it vs getting by another year.

wire-brush, then paint, then smear this

on the outlet and install the new hose. it will fill the pits and get you another year.
