Freeze plug question.

This is a 302 mercruiser "888" transplanted into a 17 foot Chris Craft boat.
One side of recently acquired engine has had all three freeze plugs replaced. You can see where the guy slapped them up in there with what looks like some two part epoxy. Well the one popped out during the engines last run. During the run and before the freeze plug came out the temp was reading ok and the thermostat was visibly kicking in according to temp gauge.

So.....do i just slap the plug back in with some JB Weld and cross my fingers or is there a better way. obviously i would want to clean up the iron a little better than the previous job.

The other side of the block has all original freeze plugs, they are factory black and don't seem to have been messed with.

you get new ones, install them with the prop sized driver and use a Permatex type sealant. From the looks of it, they were leaking a bit anyway

Not to contridict BT but you can use a rubber expandable one for the time and then do it right in the winter..
Just to keep you going.

But if you look at the picture, the motor is out already. Might as well fix it right with a real plug, not a temporary one.

I like JB Weld and use it a lot. An old Yamaha still has the oven baked kick start pin in it

That is not the place for JB Weld --- If it don't hold it will leak and if it does you will never get the plug out again.

Clean the holes with some 320 wet or dry in the wet mode and wipe all clean. Use some good sealer ( I like Copper Coat / your choice ) and tap them in flush with a flat plate or installer if you have one to keep the pressure even.
