I got my boat out of storage and while I was putting all the hoses and plugs in I noticed one freeze plug on the side of the block is out about 1/4 inch or so. I tried to tap it back in and it never budged, so I was wandering if I should try to make it flush or let it go. I dont remember it being like that last year but I also dont remember feeling around the block either. When I winterized it I pulled all the hoses, manifold plugs, and block plugs and used antifreeze. Thanks for any info.

Re: Freeze plugs

i'd think it'd depend on weather or not it leaks. if it does, then ya will need to be ontoit. if it don't leak. keep an eye on it since it may have been something that ya never noticed before. if no leak. i'd leave well enough alone. i'd think sealed would be sealed on a freeze plug. least that's the way i think i'd start out......

Re: Freeze plugs

Depending on what engine you have, that 1/4" may be all that holds that CORE plug in. It's not there to prevent freeze damage, freeze plug is just a bit of slag terminology that many take to mean something.
Run the engine and see if it leaks, and watch your oil. If the oil turns milky, you are in need of an engine.
When you pulled the drain plugs for the engine, did you use a wire or something to make sure the holes were clear? On a raw water cooled engine, those drains plugs get blocked all the time.

Re: Freeze plugs

Thats kind of what I am thinking. I was going to put muffs on it until I saw the weather tonight and it may get below freezing again this week and I dont have time to drain it because the kids will want to be out there with me and gets a little hard to do.It goes to the dealer this week for new u- joints and gimble bearing. I guess if I run out of time I will have them look at that to.

Re: Freeze plugs

Yes, I ran a screw driver in it and I think I wouldnt have if the plug wasnt the way it was. It has a plug inside of a plug ( if that makes sense) and was missing the smaller inside plug and never leaked so I knew it was plugged up and kept poking it until there was no more water to come out. It is a 1994 4.3 li. merc.

Re: Freeze plugs

Just make sure you tell them to look at it when they run it.
Hopefully they run it and check shifting and make sure there work is done correctly.
But they may not notice a leaking core plug if it's someplace not readily seen.
You have yet to say what engine and drive setup you have or what plug is pushed out. So it's all kind of a WAG (Wild Azz Guess)

Re: Freeze plugs

Forgot to mention that I checked the other side and it is flush or set in a little. Thanks for all the info.

Re: Freeze plugs

It is the plug that is on the port side about right in the middle almost in line with block drain plug.

Re: Freeze plugs

The outer lip should be in 1/16th in the flat surface of the block.

Re: Freeze plugs

I spent a little time today and was able to get it tapped back into flush. Later this week I am going to try it and hope all is well. Thanks for the info.
