fresh water hook up - 96 oceanrunner 225

hello all, newbie here. great site. i got a flushing motor question.

i need to use muffs to flush motor. i was wondering if i can remove plug where water goes out of for a tattle tale on this outboard and put in a fresh water flush plug. will this flush the motor ? also, do i need to turn motor on to flush or just let the water run.

on my 94 J150 you can attach hose at the telltale plug and flush, running or not.
