Guys -

I'm trying to wire up the 'new' engine. The old engine had a fuse block (black box near the rear of the boat, the new one has nothing like it and the plugs do not match. Is this box necessary? If it is, where would I find one?

Thanks in advanc.e

1998 Special, does not have a VRO pump. it is a premix fuel motor. that is the main reason it is called and 88 special, instead of a 90hp. also the wiring harness changed in 1996, you need an adapter pig tail kit.

The "88 Special" MAY have an oil pump. They were a dealer installed item. If it does, you will know. There is an oil tank/lines involved.

The 89-70 HP may have a different type of trim system. That is what that black box is most likely for. Remove the lid and look for solenoids. If they are there, it is the trim box.

All of the other controls will work for your "88 Special". You have:

1. The big RED plug.

2. battery Positive/Negative leads.

3. Gear/Throttle cables.

You can hook up your trim wires directly to the "88 Special" avoiding the "trim solenoid box". Green=Down, Red=Batt. Positive, Blue=Up.

Thanks for the responses. It does not have an oil pump, it is a pre-mix engine. Have all of the controls to swap in, so it should be simple. Will open up the box to see what it is.

You are correct, I mis-represented the year, the tag on the back of the engine says 1996.

Thanks again.

Don't get hung up too much on the motor differences. The wiring is what's different in this scenario. There are adaptors to use a 1995 & older boat harness to connect to a 1996 & newer engine harness. There are some advantages to using the 96 & up boat harness as far as gauges go but no big deal.
