I know what you mean Dave. Some spares are 3 or even 4 times the price.

The worst I've come across so far is the pins for the OMC rubber connectors. In England, £4.50 EACH PIN!, in the states 55 cents each!

I think it's all down to the Belgiuns! They've never liked us! LOL

That's too bad, guys. That's essentially what the Japanese are doing to us with car parts. eg: $600.00 for a 4-Cylinder Nissan Distributor. Ripoffs!

Is it tariffs? if not are distribution costs that high? is there some kind of exclusive distribution rights? if not I don't see how margins could remain that high for extended period of time without competition entering the market.

there oughta be a law!

I spoke to several OMC dealers, and apparently all the OMC parts we buy here have to be ordered from Belgium. Then there is a minimum order size, so if you want a part that costs less than the minimum order, you have to wait until someone else orders another part to bump the order up before they wil send your part!

I'm sure stuff could be imported from the States and still sold a lot cheaper than the prices we are charged.

Maybe there's an pening there for someone?

Steve

Hey Dave, why not just do what I do and buy your spares from the US? Even by the time you've paid the shipping, and the tax and duty if it's over the limit, it still works out cheaper!
I bought a load of stuff for my Johnson, it was well over the duty free limit so I got stung £22 for that, and the priority shipping was $44, but even taking that into account I saved 50% on UK prices.

Thanks PH
Who in the States do you buy from ?
I've tried that but couldn't find anyone who shipped overseas.
Just fitted my new power pack at a cost of £101.59 engine runs great, I think the old unit had been messing about for sometime.
The slow function kicked in 2 years ago,had to disconnect the tan wire to override it,tan wire now reconnected and it starts, runs and ticks over like a new engine.
Thanks to all again,
Dave

I got my stuff from go2marine.com, I think someone here put me on to them, there was no problem with shipping to the UK.
I got a friend of mine in the US to pay for my stuff as he owed me some money anyway, but afaik there is no problem with them taking credit cards.

You may also want to check out boatfix.com as they ship internationally. They carry Sierra, Mercruiser/Mercury, and GLM parts I know. Likely others as well. Their prices are low in US dollars compared to some places.

Hello guys.
Did you try and find out whether IBOATS can send the stuff across the pond?
Since you are using their bandwidth for your thread, you might want to consider that.

Re: From a Ripped off Brit to all you guys in the States

I believe I checked out iboats when I was looking for a supplier, iirc they didn't have all the parts I needed, and didn't reply when I enquired if they could supply them. Preferring to buy all my parts from one supplier I followed up some of the leads I was given by forum members.
Having said that, if iboats could supply the parts I wanted at a good price I would buy from them of course.

Would you Brits get a better shake from a Canadan supplier?
