New to the boat scene. Just sold one of my first motor, 15hp force 1985. I wanted a more reliable motor so I'm looking towards "johnnyrude" motors. Mainly any 15-25hp going on my 14ft aluminum. My question is, is there any year that I should look for being more reliable? My budget is under 700 :( THanks all

Reliability is more a function of how well a motor has been maintained, than it is a testament to good engineering in my opinion.

Any Johnnyrude from '55 to '85 will be good, check compression before buying.

Factory owner's and service manual will help you keep it in top shape.:)

1970 25hp Johnys are good motors. The design is based on the old Fastwin from the 1950's with some mods in the powerhead to get the extra horses. It's still an old 22 cube motor with a long running track record, as far as reliability. The nice thing about it too, is that it has the older style universal ignition system, that was used from 1951, on up into the 70's.

The used outboard game is always a gamble. A good test run on a boat is your best bet in my opinion, but I know that's not always possible. Depending on where you are, you should be able to find a decent motor for $700 or less. Update your location in your profile. You may have a member here with a good runner near you. Good luck.
