First time posting on this site, alot of good information. Hopefully someone can help me with my situation, I was trying to change the water pump on a 1994 C115 Yamaha. I removed the one bolt for the zinc anode and the other six remaining bolts holding the lower unit to the housing but the unit isn't separating. I believe its been about 4 or 5 years since the impeller was serviced on this motor. I have heard about the driveshaft seizing at the block over time. I've also heard about applying heat to separate the lower unit. Can someone give me some tips on how to do this? Also are there any tricks to removing the lower unit that I'm missing? Thanks to everyones help on this.

did ya remove the 7th bolt?
its under the trim tab pocket pointing up. if you dont remove that one, the unit can be difficult to remove :)

Re: Frozen 115 yamaha lower unit!!!!

Thanks for your reply. Yes I took that bolt out. I used a screwdriver inserted in the hole at the front between the lower unit and midsection to try to spearate the sections but the front would only separate a few millimeters. I seems like the rear section of the lower unit is frozen to the mid-section. I tried using a 3 pound rubber mallet to tap at the rear section but it wouldn't budge. Even resorted to stanging on the cavation plate but it would move either. I'm running out of options.

My lower unit was stuck like yours on my Yamaha 1989 150 H.P. Pro V outboard. After removal of all 7 bolts would not drop down. Took 13 inch rim with tire on it off my boat trailer and put my hand in center hub hole and slung it against lower unit, below cavitation plate of course and it came loose and dropped down , might try that. ;) ;) Good Luck.

I want to make sure I get this right..you slung it in a horizontal direction? If you hit it in the vertical direction what did you hit against?

Re: Frozen 115 yamaha lower unit!!!!

are you sure you took 7 14mm hex head bolts out AND the trim tab bolt? the trim tab bolt is the 12mm hex bolt that holds the tab in place. after that it can be stuck on the dowel pins. but that never happens on a properly maintained rig :)

I took the tire & rim and hit it horizonally not vertically against the fat part of gearcase. Worked for me.The tire has lots of weight more than a 3 lb rubber hammer and tire cushions the impact. ;)

Re: Frozen 115 yamaha lower unit!!!!

I mean if the service intravel is followed from the time the unit is uncrated it will most likely never NEED a water pump,t-stats, pressure valve carb job or a oxy/acetylyne tourch to remove sevice fasteners. if you look very very very closely on any service intravel guide it will be laid out in engine hours OR a date intravel. all the standard service stuff is there.
all the cooling portion of the yamaha is 200 hours OR once per year for tear down and inspection. I have never had a properly maintained rig have a stuck drive shaft or frozen lower unit or pump bolts.
I did have a customer that brought me a C85 last year with the silver blue paint on the head brown and was bragging that it had not had a pump in 10 years. I politly told him it was not gonna get one now either. he took it down the road and found out why. I dont get involved with neglected corrosion monsters anymore. by the time I spent 5 to 8 hours heating, drilling and tapping or heli-coiling at $75 per hour the repair will not be worth it. you cannot catch upon 10 years of neglect for $100 bucks. I bill $125 per hole for broken bolts. just how life is. same with mercruisers here. if the drive has not been off in 5 years there is a good chance it wont. I will make them sign the work order stating I am not responsible for broken fasteners and the billing rate changes for broken bolt/stud removal. Ialso bill even if it comes apart and is to corroded to reassemble. there is also a saltwater corrosion rider on any and all estimates. but mostly if its been neglected I wont touch it. that is for the shade tree independant down the street.

Rodbolt, you are the MAN. I felt so stupid after I looked up in the trim tab pocket. Then I said to myself, "Thats why it lower unit wouldn't separate?!?!?" Anyway thanks again for your help. One other question, after struggling with removing the old woodruff key I finally got it off, but I can't get the new one on. Any tricks on getting the new woodruff on the driveshaft?

red
the easy way to remove the key is use a chisel. place the chiesel vertically against the key with the chisel inline and up against the shaft and drive it down. I use my knife to cut away any burrs. then place the key in the groove and use a 12" x3/4" brass drift to tap it in the groove. test fit the impeller when done to make sure its seated and square. also install the gasket and plate correctly or ya have to take the key out again :) if ya do a couple hundred a year its easy :)

OK Rod, I finally got the woodruff key out and I need help with one more thing. How do you get the impeller into the housing. I can't seem to bend the rubber impeller into the housing. I tried doing it with the impeller installed on the shaft and just installing the impeller into the pump housing off of the shaft. Also does all of the fins need to be pointed in the correct position if it is a new impeller?

Re: Frozen 115 yamaha lower unit!!!!

put the impellor down on the shaft. place the impellor housing over the impellor then push down while turning the drive shaft clockwise. use a little grease inside the chrome insert to make it all go together smoothly.
