Man I think you and I are in synch or something. I just did this. The best way is to cut out just the center portion of the pin with a sawzall and really good carbide metal blade.

Then, take a ball joint or similar heavy duty press and start turining slowly on first one side and then the other. You can try a big C clamp - if it's not too bad that will do it. If you use a C clamp put a socket on the back to give the pin some place to go as you push it out.

Then get a rotary tool with a good quality stone and clean out the holes on the ears to remove all the oxidation until your new anchor pin slides in and out easily.

If you want to drill the pin out you need a really good cobalt bit made for drilling SS. Cut them flush with the sawzall and then drill first with a 1/4" and move up from there. You still need to cut the center portion of the pin out as discussed above.

Whatever you do, don't hammer on the pin. Chances are very good if you do, you will break the back of the ear on the gimbal ring.

Re: Frozen anchor pin removal

Thanks Ralph,I dont have a sawsall,is that my best shot at cutting it??I was thinking of grinding the middle of the pin to have 2 flat sides and try to put a wrench on it to get it to move a little. It may be too frozen in place to try this though.I guess I will have to improvise as I go along.I am pulling the boat for the season at the end of October and just trying to get all my jobs lined up that need to be done. Thanks for any ideas. CC,

You could give that a try - SS it tough to grind and even drill though.

If you have a rotary tool (Dremel) or a air powered grinder you can use cutoff wheels to cut through them. You just need a steady hand to prevent the wheels from breaking once you're into the meat of the pin. It takes about 4 wheels to get through it :p I've cut them both ways and the sawzall is by far the easiest and fastest ( took about 1/4 the time when using a really good carbide blade) You only get about 1-2 cuts per blade though. SS is tough stuff.

Hey, If you are in the market for a sawzall check out sears asap. They have a Crftsman one on sale for 1/2 price this week ($49.99) Go to Sears.com and search for 00917104000.

Mine where really stuck - all that salt for all those years. The only thing that worked was the ball joint press (the big C clamp actually bent) You can borrow one from Autozone for free I think.

Good luck. Remember, whatever you do, don't get tempted to try to hammer it out. Trust me - I did on one side and broke an ear off the ring

I will probably try the Dremel,i have cut with it before but not something that thick.I dont know if the grind flat and wrench method will work.the wrench will be too small for any kind of leverage. the only thing I use a hammer for on my boat is to fix dings in the prop.I cant remember what i broke ,but i learned the hard way too!!
