So, I have a 4.3L Mercruiser that needs to be replaced, I am doing it(AArgh!)...
For those who have tackled this job, how did you pull it off (or out, lol), standard engine hoist?, engine crane?, tree branch?, "A" frame with chain fall? The boat will stay on the trailer and it is way off the ground....just looking for your input...
TIA!
cheers,:D

I use cherry picker along with a chain fall. But any of the methods you mentioned will work. You doing this re-power in or out doors?

Howdy,

Any of the above works.

remove the drive first though.....get your hands on an OEM Mercruiser service manual for your model.....

I can easily drag home a cherry picker and I will be working indorrs, worry is the lift height on the picker, worried it wont lift high enough to get it over the rear of the boat while on trailer....I have a chain fall too, just no "A" frame here....I will have to go and measure the boat height.....I have to have all questions answered in my little pea brain prior to ordering the engine....going with www.rapidomarine.com
thanks and keep them coming!
cheers, :D

(so, ok, I just measured the rear deck and it is 53" high, I guess most cherry pickers will do this with the chain fall attached...well, guess I gotta get me one, TOOLS TOOLS AND MORE TOOLS!, lol)(and, I have the manual for it and have already been reading what I dont want to do!, but, I love my son and told him I would make a boat out of this heap for him, haaha(damnit!, what was I thinking, worked on this boat all friggin summer!)(sorry for the babbling)

I cold pull and raise the engine easily. Accessing it with the cherry picker/chain hoist from the back of the boat. However in order to clear the transom with the engine, I had to lower the stern of the boat. I did this by raising the bow until the rear cross member of the trailer touched the ground. Then I pulled the engine over the transom to remove it.

Just pulled the motor out of my sons boat too. we were lucky the boat sits low in the water and on the trailer. If we encounterd problems with clearence we were going to let the air out of the trailer tires and if that was not enough we were going to take the wheels off the trailer and lower it to the ground. Just some ideas. Good luck!

Backhoes work extremely well and make it very easy. Transom rail on this 30' Sea Ray is 7' from the ground. Putting a Rapido 5.7 back into it this weekend.

Put a chain fall on my big hook sticking out of my ceiling in garage. Lifted motor up high enough and pulled boat out on trailer. Just had to do the coupling. Easy job.

I have never had a problem lifting an engine out of a boat using a cherry picker. If I needed more height I would raise the front of the boat all the way up and/or let the air out of the tires on the trailer...

I have heard some guys took the boat and got an auto wrecker to lift the engine and lower it into their pickup truck box for them. It was something like $75 bucks if you disconnect everything first.

This is what you need to pull out an engine.
