I noticed a boat for sale with a 190 hp mercruiser. Boat year isn't specified but must be a 92 - 96. Is this the aluminum block engine?

Are there any other options to replace the engine with? Would only the engine need replacing or would the drive all have to be fixed as well?

I can do the work myself I just am not sure what all would be required and if there were any other engine options that would work with the drive.

Probably not. It is more likely a 4.3 V6, if newer than 1989. If it is a 4 cylinder then it is the 470 aluminum block, and the 190 was made around 1986. If the MCM 4, there is no easy (worthwhile) swap. By frozen, do you mean locked up or cracked from freezing water?

Yeah 4.3v6 Not aluminum... iron. Keep the same motor if you can or if you go reman keep same size. Does this boat come with an engine? Can you rebuild it? If you go v8 you will need new outdrive with different gears, exhaust manifolds, etc = $$$.

Re: Frozen Block

Thanks, quick search and I was confused as to what engine that would be and saw something about an aluminum 190 that is hard to find parts for.

4.3L sounds right, the boat comes with the engine but he says the motor is cracked. Guessing it is the block that is cracked. I believe I could just get a hold of an automotive block and swap over all the accessories though correct?

If you do a search, this has been covered many times with many opinions. But it can, and has been done. I would make sure the block is of a similar casting as there are several. Get you some brass freeze plugs. And the boat cam is going to be closer to a truck cam. Head gaskets are another overlooked point. Yes, all external accessories will bolt right up. Be prepared to pull the sterndrive and check ujoints and gimbal bearing. Check alignment once new engine is installed.

If the boat is in good shape... hull and interior, putting a new engine in can save you some money. Hopefully you can get it for a good price.

Thanks, still not sure if I want to take this on. The boat looks good and is a 1994. Price is ok but the parts are expensive to get here. If I can find a block and think I can do it might just tackle it though since I would like a nice boat but am on a budget.

Re: Frozen Block

Ugh, just got some more pictures of it and the interior needs to be redone and I also noticed a crack in fiberglass back at the swim platform. Definitely didn't take good care of the boat, I am going to be staying away from that potential nightmare.
