My friend called me down to his boat today. He has a 1978 235hp Johnson. The steering is frozen on it. He had the outer part of the cable disconnected from the motor. He tried driving the stainless rod through, but it only went about 2 inches and is completely stuck now. Neither of us have any idea how to get it the rest of the way out. I am afraid that he has beat on it so hard, that the end is mushroomed inside the tilt tube.

Since the motor turns very easily, is there another type of steering cable/assembly that he could install, or should he pull the motor off the boat and get a new cable and tilt tube?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give us.

Scott

Probably best to get it off the hull and setup where you can add some heat along with a direct shot on the punching device with a big hammer. Not much else you can do. If you take the cutoff wheel to what's left on the cable side maybe it will give you another direction to try to move the remains.
