From what is have read on other sites, MFG was one of first companies to use FRP, or, Fiber Reinforced Plastic. It is a compressed, moulded product, verus an process layed down on wood, or a form. My question is this. Does this have the same, end result, or is one structurally stronger than the other? When repairing the FRP product, should there be any special consideration because of the different processes. When using regular, fiberglassing techniques. I have just bought what I believe is a late 70's Royal Caprice. It is a bright orange, over the entire body. The seam at the front lost a battle with a dock, and was crunched a bit. Any input would be greatly appreciated. I am new to this site, and have read enough comments to know there is ALOT of expertise out there. Thanks, again for your help.

Re: FRP vs. Fiberglass

FRP and what is commonly called fiberglass are the exact same thing.

Technically, fiberglass, is just that though, glass fibers, and FRP would be the correct term for the final cured combination of resin and glass. But for the most part the term FRP has been replaced by the term composites because many other fibers, resins and cores are used in construction now.

How the product is molded does not change what its called when it comes to the description of FRP, fiberglass or composite.

This most likely means little to your actual question though.

Just glass it back in any way that works for you and it will be fine.

Re: FRP vs. Fiberglass

I forgot all about this FRP, we are doing the World Trade Center park at work and using a 12 foot 3/4" thick FRP for our stainless grating to sit on. It is in the shape of angle guess I should go see how much extra we have that would be a great stringer and the price is even better. I want to say the legs are 10" tall and the other leg is 3 inches. So like said above this will work in glassing it in. I just forgot that we are doing this job and I am in charge of getting all the pieces together............

hi salty2.......

welcome to iboats :)

on-da-rvr (on the river) has got you covered.

start a thread on your project and let us chime in.

may i suggest that you not get confused with the FRP/fiberglass comparisons. or the do i need to compress or vac bag. or for that mater add heat post cure. it wont matter for your boat.
your boat was most likely designed by two guys at a bar on a cocktail napkin on friday and built by the same two guys monday morning during a hangover storm.

boats are really simple......did i say simple? i meant really really simple :D

the folks here at iboats wll guide you thru, its just a lot of elbow grease...thats all.

cheers

Re: FRP vs. Fiberglass

Thanks, for all the response. The FRP stringer comment by Icyharp was interesting, because I wondered if the FRP sheets sold@ home improvement stores could have a marine application, bonding with regular fiberglass. The structural question came up because a PO has mounted a swivel seal, and a foot operated trolling motor on the closed bow. It seems very strong, but did'nt know if it should be further reinforced. Thanks for any additional input
